Are you starting from scratch building your own
internet radio station, but not sure what equipment
you need? This complete guide will show you exactly
what equipment you need to start an internet
radio station and get up and running in no time.
Broadcasting Software
Here's a list of radio automation software and stand alone encoders to fit your needs. This software is essential to perform live radio shows.
Broadcasting license
You need a written permission by all rights owners to the music you play, or a license from the organisation that hands these out in your territory, i.e. GEMA in Germany, Suisa in Switzerland or AKM in Austria. For other countries we suggest to contact your local authorities or ask for suggestions in the community. We do not enforce or monitor licensing regulations for any streaming accounts.
Microphone & Preamp
We recommend 2 microphones for basic internet radio setups: Behringer B1 and Rode Podcaster. Both microphones are reliable and cost-effective. The Rode Podcaster can be plugged into a USB bus on your PC or Mac, so you won't need any preamps to get the audio into your computer. The Behringer B1 comes without USB interface, so you need a preamp to amplify the microphone level to line level suitable for the line input of your soundcard. We recommend the dbx 286S.
Music
To broadcast music you need: music. Surprise! :) If you got some audio CDs, you can use Exact Audio Copy to convert the music to WAV or MP3 files. We recommend to use WAV for livestreaming and MP3 files for our AutoDJ.
